We do what we can to avoid that Siesta Syndrome by thinking critically about what we eat at lunch and choosing healthy foods. But do we realize that some of our wholesome choices could be contributing to our afternoon cubical coma. Here are five healthful, but energy-stealing foods that you may want to remove from your dieting lunch.
Turkey – Ever wonder why we love to snooze after that Thanksgiving feast? It may be from overstuffing, but it can also be blamed on the star of the show, the gobble. Turkey is high in Tryptophan, which is an essential amino acid. Tryptophan increases the levels of the serotonin and melatonin in the brain, which calm our minds and help us doze off.
Beans – Most athletes will gladly put down the can of beans for a source of protein and Vitamin B, but beans are also a good source of Magnesium, which has calming affects, and turkey’s sleep-tripping Tryptophan.
Soy Products – Tofu, soy nuts, and soy milk are great sources of protein, but also rank high on the Glycemic Index. High glycemic foods are digested and absorbed quickly, and this quick absorption causes rapid fluctuations in our blood sugar and causes a sugar crash effect. Low glycmic foods are slowing digested and absorbed resulting in little fluctuation and have proven benefits for health and daily energy.
Dairy Products – A glass of warm milk contains has all the sleepy fun of turkey and beans, with Tryptophan and Magnesium, and it puts crying babes to sleep with ease. The same is true for cottage cheese, yogurt and other dairy products.
Nuts – Another great source of protein, nuts are ranked fairly low on the Glycemic Index, but they have that same secret sleep ingredient Tryptophan.
If you’re looking to catch up some the sleep, these are foods you should enjoy, but if you’re like the rest of us who need 25 hours in a day, avoid these five energy erasing foods.
