Purple Heart Homes was founded for veterans by veterans Dale Beatty and John Gallina in 2008. Dale and John joined the North Carolina National Guard together in 1996. After the 9/11 attack they re-enlisted and both were severely wounded in Iraq on November 15th, 2004 when the Humvee they were in hit a land mine. Dale lost both legs and John suffered a traumatic brain injury.
Dale spent a year recovering at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and when he returned home to Statesville, North Carolina his entire community, including best friend and former contractor John, helped build him a handicap accessible home.
When the house was finished, Dale and John decided they needed to pay it forward and help other disabled veterans. So they pooled their military disability payments together to start Purple Heart Homes.
The non-profit helps all service connected disabled veterans, even if they served decades, ago like Joe Recupero, who was a Corporal in the Army during the Vietnam War.
So far, Purple Heart Homes has helped 31 veterans with their housing needs and with 5-hour ENERGY’s $50,000 donation they plan to help more.
