Almost 3 years ago, a sniper in Afghanistan shot Melissa Jarboe’s husband Jamie. The bullet severed his spinal cord and he was left as a quadriplegic. After months in the hospital they found out he was terminal. Jamie asked Melissa to promise him she would help care for his fellow service members.

Kids’ Food Basket

Kids’ Food Basket founder, Mary K. Hoodhood created the non-profit in 2001 when a Grand Rapids Public School Principal told Mary K. about how she saw a student digging in a dumpster after school looking for food to take home. Mary K., who was already a long-time Meals on Wheels volunteer, wanted to help ensure Michigan students were getting adequate nutrition after school.

Purple Heart Homes

Purple Heart Homes was founded for veterans by veterans Dale Beatty and John Gallina in 2008. Dale and John joined the North Carolina National Guard together in 1996. After the 9/11 attack they re-enlisted and both were severely wounded in Iraq on November 15th, 2004 when the humvee they were in hit a land mine. Dale lost both legs and John suffered a traumatic brain injury.
