Auto Club Speedway Race Report
No. 15 Toyota driver Clint Bowyer finished 15th in Sunday’s 400-mile NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. Bowyer was two laps away from finishing third when a cut tire sent the Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota into a spin creating a green-white-checkered finish. Bowyer pitted for new tires and restarted at the back of the field for the two-lap shootout. With heavy traffic and close racing Bowyer climbed to 15th before the checkered flag fell. Until the disappointing finish, the No. 15 looked to be one of the fastest cars on the track leading twice for two laps even driving from the back of the field earlier in the event. Confusion over whether NASCAR turned on the pit road opening light caused Bowyer to miss the pit entrance. He pitted after the rest of the field and restarted at the back. The No. 15 team returns to action Sunday at Martinsville Speedway.
- Started fifth and finished 16th.
- Running third with two laps to go when cut tire caused No. 15 to spin.
- Led twice for two laps.
- Drove from the back of the field after missing pit road early in the race.
BOWYER: “We can't seem to catch a break. We led for a while, we came back after confusion with the lights on pit road and were in contention to win at the end. However, we started feeling a vibration with about four to go and it just didn't make it. It just stinks for this team. We had an awesome PEAK Toyota and we had shot to win today.
