Toni Hill

Story #20
Air Date: November 13, 2013

Toni Hill is the Founder of the Northeast Mississippi Birthing Project. Toni tells us she’s been fascinated with birth since the young age of 13 and in 2002 she officially became a doula {a woman experienced in childbirth who provides advice, information, emotional support, and physical comfort to a mother before, during, and just after childbirth. -Merriam-Webster}

At the Northeast Mississippi Birthing Project Toni helps to pair teenage, poverty stricken, and single pregnant women with volunteer mentors. She regularly teaches classes including community doula programs and breastfeeding classes. Toni Hill also throws community baby showers for pregnant women in the community who can’t afford a shower of their own.

One of her ultimate goals is to help women in Mississippi have healthy babies. Currently, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Mississippi ranks as the number one state for the highest infant mortality rate.

Toni uses her own car and pays for gas so she can drive expecting and new moms in the community to doctor’s appointments and Birthing Project classes. One of the first things she would like to do with the $50,000 gift from 5-hour ENERGY® Helps is buy a multi passenger van.

Northeast Mississippi Birthing Project is a branch of Birthing Project USA.
