Food & Wine reports that the Pina Colada was invented in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1954 by bartender Ramón "Monchito" Marrero at the Caribe Hilton hotel. As the story goes, Marrero was commissioned to craft a signature drink capturing the island's spirit, so he combined white rum, fresh pineapple juice, and newly invented Coco López cream of coconut. Puerto Rico named it the national drink in 1978 and since then the Piña Colada has become a global icon, synonymous with beach vacations, warm weather, and carefree moments.
